Dattatreya Ramachandra Bendre, often considered a fatherly figure of Kannada poetry, received the Jnanpith Award in 1973 for his celebrated work 'Nakutanti' (Four Strings). This anthology of poems is regarded as one of the finest examples of 'Shrutikavya'.
Bendre drew deeply from folklores and vachanas of the Kannada poetic tradition, establishing himself as a leading poet of the Navodaya period in Kannada literature. He was given the honorific titles 'Varakavi' (Gifted Poet) and 'Karnataka Kula Thilaka' (The Ornament of the Karnataka Family). In recognition of his contributions, he was also awarded the Padma Shri in 1968.
