Kota Shivaram Karanth, a writer, Yakshagana artist, environmentalist, and film-maker, was the third Kannada writer to receive the Jnanpith Award in 1977 for his work 'Mookajjiya Kanasugalu' (Dreams of Silent Granny). This novel explores profound human themes such as doubt, faith, and the origins of beliefs through the conversations between an old granny and her grandson.
Karanth made significant contributions to Kannada art and culture, notably reviving Yakshagana, a traditional form of folk theater. In addition to his literary accomplishments, he was deeply involved in social and environmental causes, participating in movements like protests against the Kaiga nuclear plant and the pollution of the Tungabhadra river.
He was honored with several prestigious awards, including the Pampa Award, Sahitya Academy Award, and Sangeet Natak Award.
