Kuvempu (Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa)

 

Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa, better known as Kuvempu, was the first Kannada author to receive the prestigious Jnanpith Award in 1967 for his epic work Sri Ramayana Darshanam. This magnum opus, a modern poetic rendition of the Valmiki Ramayana, spans 22,284 lines and reflects Kuvempu’s grand vision of universal harmony.

Recognized as one of the most influential poets of the 20th century, Kuvempu was honored with the titles Rashtrakavi (National Poet) and Karnataka Ratna (Gem of Karnataka) by the Government of Karnataka. In 1988, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Vibhushan for his contributions to Indian literature and culture.

Kuvempu also holds the distinction of composing the Karnataka State anthem"Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate", cementing his legacy as a literary giant deeply connected to Kannada heritage.
